Ryan Klesko was the only non-starter to start the game for the Giants. He batted 5th and played about 7 innings at 1B. Klesko went 1 for 3 with a run scored to raise his BA to .387.

Not so sure that Ryan Klesko is a non-starter. He's very likely to a better hitter than Aurilia. If he's no injured, I think he'll be playing first.
Actually Aurilia will play first. Before he even signed he pretty much wanted a guarentee that he would have a starting job, otherwise he was going to stay with the Reds. And Klesko himself has said he will be coming off of the bench, unless ofcourse Aurilia is still hurt when the season starts
Yep....the Giants have been saying all along that Aurilia is the firstbaseman and the Giants depth chart shows Klesko as #2. Now if Aurilia doesn't hit and Klesko does....that can all change. But as of right now.......Aurilia is the starter.
Klesko signed a contract for less than a million because of his injury history. But Aurilia wasn't a good hitter his last two years as a Giant, is older than he was then, and hits like a ss against rhp instead of a 1b. Klesko hopefully wins at least a platoon, because unless 2001 Aurilia shows up, the Giants would be better off. Of course, Aurilia should be playing third and benching the worst hitting starter.
I think the plan is for Klesko to be Bonds' replacement in LF most of the time when Bonds takes the day off and to spell Aurilia when he is off or when he is playing another position. It may very well be that those plans change over the course of the year.....but as of now...Rich Aurilia is the starting firstbaseman.
Klesko has 12 innings in LF and 29 innings at 1B this spring. Absent an injury somewhere...that's probably about what the ratio will be in the regular season. As a further note.......Aurilia has had 51 innings at 1B, 0 at 2B, 5 at SS and 8 at 3B....also probably just about what the ratios will be in the regular season.
That may well be, GF9, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Assuming Linden continues to hit and hit with authority, you want to get him ABs. So, having essentially a 4 man OF rotation makes the most sense, for getting Linden ABs and resting the other guys, while still assuring good production and good D. Assuming Klesko is back, a 1b platoon makes the most sense. Both Richie and Klesko have significant differentials, RH vs LH pitching. To ignore that and put Aurelia in there against RHs doesn't seem like a very smart, competitive decision. Having Klesko start against RHs and Richie against LHs makes a lot of statistical sense. It also gives Bochy lots of options for 3d base. Obviously, if Feliz hits like he did in the first half last year, he gets most of the starts. If he doesn't hit, I think you see a three way, Feliz, Frandsen, Aurelia - until one of them steps up and takes the job. To keep a very good OBP guy and a guy with significant power potential (Klesko) on the bench - or more accurately, saving him for one AB a game as opposed to 3 against RH pitchers is not putting the best team on the field.
I didn't say it was a good plan. But it's obvious that is the plan.....at least going in to the season. I think the problem is that no one really believes Klesko will stay healthy. If he does.....and if he really hits like he used to (in 2002)...then I am sure plans can change. I'm not sure why this is surprising anyone.......the Giants have been talking up this plan all spring.
I think people are underestimating the number of innings there are going to be available. Bonds will miss 40 games or so......Roberts has never played more than 129 games and if Winn hits like last year.....Linden will get plenty of starts in RF. Looks to me like there are plenty of innings to get Klesko (if healthy) AND Linden 400 ABs. The only one who is really going to get screwed is Frandsen. I have no idea where his ABs are going to come from.
ok...so call me crazy, but I'm always fascinated with the shoes the boys are wearing. Is it just me or does it look like Klesko isn't even wearing a pair of spikes in this picture? I know there's molded cleats and such, but these things don't look like anything other than a flat sole.
I looked at a different photo of Klesko from yesterday. His shoes have about 50 very short rubber nubs on the bottom......not cleats. They kind of look like the kind of shoes we wore to play football on astroturf back in the day. They sure don't look like they would be good for playing baseball on the infield or natural grass.
You're right about the shoes. They're a turf-trainer kind of thing it looks like. I have a similar pair I wear for soft-pitch softball. Works great on an infield dirt, but not recommended for grass, especially if it's even slightly wet.
More than anything I was just surprised to see him wearing them. I mean, he's a pro, you'd think he'd wear some sort of metal or molded cleat, at least for a little bite in the batters box.
I have been a Giants fan for as long as I can remember. I have had Giants Regular Season Tickets for 25 years (since 1985) and Spring Training Season Tickets since the "new" Scottsdale Stadium opened in 1992. I have gone to Spring Training every year, except the strike year, since 1987. I go to A LOT of Giants games. I also go to Arizona for the Arizona Fall League every October/November. I figure I attended about 125-130 games in calendar year 2008......almost all of them involving Giants players. Baseball is a great game.....Giants' baseball is the best part of a great game!
