Scott Munter relieved Ortiz with 2 out and 1 on in the bottom of the 4th. He got Gary Matthews Jr. (who was already 2 for 2 with a HR) on a 3 pitch come-backer. Scott then threw the 5th inning, allowing 1 single and a wild pitch. For the 2nd or 3rd game in a row, Scott has had his sinker back. The wild pitch was a sinker, in the dirt, that skipped right between Bengie Molina's legs. Molina didn't make a very great effort to block the pitch.

Is Scott working his way back into the picture for the final bullpen spot? One competitor, David Cortes took a bit of a step backwards today. The other darkhorse who I'm liking much better after looking up his career stats on thebaseballcube.com is Scott Atchison.

Of course, if Mando gets traded, it could open up another spot for competition depending on what we get in return.

The problem with both Cortes and Anderson is they have to push someone off the 40 man. But, then, if they continue to really pitch well, they could take Niekro's and, I suppose Ellison's spots, since Niekro is almost certainly gone and Ellison likely is.

If I'm not mistaken, Ellison and Niekro have to make the 25 man roster or they get exposed to waivers. The 40 man roster has no application to their predicament.
