Continuation from March 8th

OK....offensively, the Giants obviously had a little something going other than the 14 free passes that the Brewers pitchers allowed, but really, I can't remember a single dominating offensive performance. Dave Roberts started in CF and went 0 for 0 with 2 walks and a run scored. Dave had his first (of hopefully not many) injury of the year and left the game early. As he left the game he was limping slightly and I saw him gesture to someone in the stands that something was wrong with his right foot or ankle. Hopefully it won't be anything serious.

Jason Ellison did not start the game, but came in in the 4th in Noah Lowry's spot in the order. Jason continued his assault on the Spring Training record books by reaching base in all 4 plate appearances. He was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, a single, a walk, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. What is it about this guy that allows him to hit .600 every spring but sees his average drop to .250 during the regular season. I would love to believe that this time it is for real....but my common sense tells me that if the Giants opened the season with him as a backup outfielder.......he would be hitting .250 with very little power or run production by June.

Todd Linden went 1 for 3 with a walk to show that Ellison isn't the only Giants' youngster who can hit a ton in Spring Training. Lance Niekro also continues to make us think he might actually be able to provide a little something to the team by going 1 for 2 with a double, 2 RBI and a hit batsman. Kevin Frandsen was 0 for 4 but managed to reach base on a fielder's choice and a hit batsman and score 2 runs.

Like I said......10 runs....but really not any remarkable offensive performances. Just an entertaining game in the sun.......and another Giants' win.

Tomorrow will be the Giants vs the A's in the first of 5 straight home games at Scottsdale Stadium. Russ Ortiz is scheduled to start the game, so it should be interesting. Can Russ continue what has been the feel good story of the spring? I can't tell you how great it would feel to me if Russ can be successful in his return to the Giants while the Giants pay him only $380K and the Diamondback's pay him $7.1 million. I am a part time, resident of the Valley of the Sun....and I have heard many D-Back fans speaks VERY badly of Russ. Just seems like poetic justice if he is able to return to his old form and provide 13-15 wins for the Giants while being paid by the D-backs. I don't know......just somehow seems right to me.

I can see, the trade Sweeney, keep Ellison scenario happening.......if Klesko can manage to stay healthy, which he hasn't so far. The Giants really have no left handed pinch hitting options past Klesko and Sweeney. Ellison has never really prospered as a part time player though.

I'm telling you, Fred thinks he is a power hitter now. He is swinging hard and often this spring. He connects relatively often......but he has not been working the counts. If he doesn't get back to swinging a little less freely......I see a Pedro Feliz with speed in the making.

As a punctuation mark on Ellison's day, Doug Greenwald on the Webcast must have mentioned at least three times that Jason has now reached base in 15 out of his last 16 PA's.

As much as I'd like to see Russ succeed, I can't get my hopes up too high until we see him go a few more innings in a game - with SF he was notorious at hitting the 5th or 6th inning "wall". (With AZ/BAL, it was a 1st inning wall.) Having said that, it *would* be a great story if he could get back to that 2001 form with our boys ... with the D-Backs footing the bill.

Just don't let Bochy give Russ the ball as he hands over a Giants lead to the bullpen. (Oh, the pain!)

Hey Sherm......this is still the GIANTS we are talking about here. If you get your hopes up too high about ANYTHING (much less Ortiz returning to form) you are destined for a heartbreak. It's just the way it is. Watch, agonize, wish and bleed with the team......but NEVER expect great things. That way you can be ecstatic when they do well...but not suicidal when they don't.

Of course.....I don't have to tell you that.....you know.

I know, I know (sigh).

But I don't have to let the rest of the Internet world know that I know.

My Giants mantra always has been: "expect the worst ... and you'll never be disappointed".

It helps me get through the day during six months out of the year (except for one Saturday in October, 2002 - but that was the 7th month I guess).

Regarding Lewis' OBP

OK, Dr B, you got me. How can you have an OBP lower than your BA?

Thanks Dr. B! (for the OBP vs. BA info).
