OK, Try Again Tomorrow

Before I made this post, I sent off a nasty e-mail to my ticket representatives with a copy to everyone else I know in the organization. In a surprisingly quick response, I just got an e-mail back saying the gates would be open within a few minutes and that the closing of practice was just a "simple miscommunication" with the security staff. Yeah...they just happened to close the gates on their own and even set an arbitrary date when fans would be let in. Not to mention that I personally saw Mike Murphy take a couple of low Minor Leaguers who just wanted to sit in the stands and watch up to the office to get a "one day pass". Apparently, it was a "simple miscommunication" with Murph too.....and he knows EVERYTHING That goes on around the park.

At any rate......I will try again tomorrow.

Maybe the moral of this story is "The squeaky wheel always gets the grease".

I figured something had to give. I imagine many fans made trips to AZ just for that reason. I would if I could afford it and get off work. Anyways, thanks for your effort and I look forward to viewing your blog tomorrow. I was waiting as patiently as I could this morning.

Whew! GF9 I follow your blog every year and I about died when I read they weren't going to let you in. Bat Rastards! But you rock!!

Actually, no. Not unless those fans buy more tickets once the games start. They don't sell any concessions or souvenirs during the practices. During the week they usually only have 50 or so fans show up......but on the weekends they can have 100-200 on the busy days. I am a little surprised they don't have 1 vendor selling beer and peanuts on the weekends.

I guess when you are overpaying guys by millions of dollars that small amount of revenue wouldn't really matter. I wonder if they would let me come and setup shop! Great way to watch the action/make some dough.

Nice work on getting in! This blog is one of my personal favorite parts of having to work through Spring Training - which sucks since I could WALK to Scottsdale Stadium from my condo. WHY CAN'T I BE RICH?!

What gores my ox is that the stadium doesn't open on game days until after batting practice. I really don't get that. It wouldn't require full staffing to admit the few loonies among us who still care enough about it to come early. Open one gate, one snack bar, minimal security, medical and custodial. How hard is that?

Equally frustrating is being denied admittance on non-game days. Up until a couple of years ago, you could go in and watch the team hit before they left for away games too, but no more. It was delightfully uncrowded and almost felt like the old days....

And hey, while we're at it, kill the music on the PA. After five long months of waiting we come to hear the sounds of spring, (ball hitting bat and popping leather, infield chatter, vendors, each other, etc.), not the same dumb songs we're subjected to all season long.

Sorry for the rant. It'll still be great to be there for the first pitch of spring in a mere two weeks.

The startup of your blog is another marker on the path to baseball. Good stuff!

Can you post any pictures you have of aaron rowand? Also, do you know what the best time is to watch practice/get autographs? Thanks! Your blog is awesome!

Hey Samson:

I don't personally get autographs.....but the best time is when the players first get to the park...starting about 7AM. Some of them will sign in between practice stations, some will sign only before or after practice and some won't sign at all.

Come to practice in the morning. It is usually completely over by noon or 1PM. Weekdays are better than weekends because there are less fans (improves your autograph chances too).
